Back in 2013 we had an idea for a cherry orchard, an orchard that grows local produce for the surrounding villages and towns. We do enjoy buying local, seasonal produce and thought what could we grow that we love in North Bucks? Cherries!
Delicious, dark red, scrumptious cherries.
2014 was a busy year prepping the land and constructing
the trellis.
2015 was the year we planted our cherry trees, all five varieties of them; Lapins, Kordia, Regina, Merchant and Belise. We have planted the trees using the Upright Fruiting Offshoots (UFO) system. This is where the trees are planted at a 45 degree angle then tied down horizontally onto the trellis. The reason for using this system is to be able to produce a fruiting wall, with easily accessible cherries for picking and a straight forward pruning regime.
2016 was spent tending to our trees.
2017 was the year of our first harvest.
2018 we were pleased with this years crop, albeit a small yield but delicious and sweet with excellent Brix levels.
2019 What a year! Unfortunately the Merchant cherries were hit by the late frost and so we only had a very small crop. The remaining four varieties more than made up for it. They were delicious and we were delighted with the feedback we received from lots of customers. The Regina was dark, large and so flavoursome, the Kordia just hanging off the trees in abundance and the Lapins, twice the size of last year, crop went on and on. We are thrilled to also have some new outlets for Horwood Cherries. On to pruning, general maintenance and already looking forward to 2020 harvest!
2020 As we all know this year has had its challenges, despite this Horwood Cherries produced some delicious fruit and we were delighted with the feedback we received from customers new and old, with many shifting their allegiance to locally sourced produce.
2021 The late May frosts did affect this year’s yield, however the cherries that did come through the frosts, thrived! They were once again plump, juicy and downright delicious! We are very excited to have developed some new relationships with both shops and restaurants. See our stockists list.
2022 It was a very warm, dry summer and this was the year we threw open the gates and welcomed our first Pick Your Own customers. We can now descibe our trees as mature as this was our sixth harvest and they produced the most wonderful cherries. We so enjoyed meeting and chatting to all those who came and took particular delight in seeing the variety of trugs and other recepticles people brought to harvest the cherries into. We hope to see you all again next season. We were very honoured to be included in the Chilterns Recipe Book by Rebecca Fleckney.
